Shrek 2: Fairy Godmother’s Hidden Category

I can’t believe I didn’t figure this out until just a couple of weeks ago.

Do you remember that scene when Shrek, Donkey, and Puss all go to Fairy Godmother’s factory? They charm their way in, and then run into Fairy Godmother in her potion studio. Such an encounter with the owner and operator of a major company would, in real life, result in being kicked out or arrested immediately – especially having wandered into a highly restrictive area where potions are being created. Real life result? For sure, arrested. But instead, Fairy Godmother opens a conversation.. I have to assume it’s because she was caught off-guard and also curious. I can’t imagine many, if any, people/creatures have ever gotten that far into her factory without being stopped.

Now, the scene went like this:

Shrek:
Sorry to barge in like this but uh–
Fairy Godmother:
What in Grimm’s name are you doing here?
Shrek:
Well…it seems that Fiona’s not exactly happy.
Fairy Godmother:
Oh-ho-ho! And there’s some question as to why that is? Well, let’s explore that, shall we?
Ah. P, P, P, P, P…Princess. Cinderella! Here we are. “Lived happily ever after.” Oh… No ogres! Let’s see. Snow White. A handsome prince. Oh…no ogres. Sleeping Beauty. Oh, no ogres! Hansel and Gretel? No! Thumbelina? No. The Golden Bird, the Little Mermaid, Pretty Woman…

Shrek 2 – Potion Factory

PAUSE!

First off, why is her library organized like this? By Princess? Most libraries are sorted into categories like Fantasy or Horror or Adventure. But by Princess?? Ok fine. We’ll accept it as just her being weird, now the second thing.

Pretty Woman?

Everytime I heard that come up I nodded along without really thinking about it. But, wait… how is Pretty Woman under Princess? She has a kind-of-cinderella story, I guess, ish? But he’s just rich, not a prince. So why is she under Princess?

And then it hit me.

In Fairy Godmother’s weirdly organized wall of books, the Princess section could very well be followed by a Prostitute section.

Me. I said that.

I think she stopped so abruptly because she accidently slipped into the next section.

Well played, Dreamworks.
